Kaltura & UVA: Using Video All Across Campus | Case Study
Related Media
Video is a core communication tool for UVA, used in almost every aspect of life both on and off campus. Hundreds of classes and lectures are made available via the web to assist teaching and facilitate distance learning. UVA has integrated video into a wide range of their systems as well, using Kaltura’s seamless integration with the Sakai Learning Management System, as well as WordPress and Drupal CMS.

Education is now being transformed. We have a new generation of students coming onto campuses that-- the YouTube generation. And they need a set of tools.
Video is everywhere. The problem with video is we just complicate it.
Before Kaltura, we had a lot of ad hoc, localized solutions at various departments.
We've been doing digital media for years-- shoot it, post-process it, put it up on the web, and deploy it all on our own.
A university with hundreds of classes that are being recorded, and different clubs and activities, and a rich media enabled admissions process is a media company.
A homegrown solution for something as fundamental as how you're going to manage your audio/video resources at an institution is just a completely implausible approach.
We wanted something, on the one hand, that had an open-source aspect to it, so we could get involved with it directly. We wanted a service-oriented approach. And so Kaltura fit those needs precisely.
Where does this fit in the spectrum of technology solutions? There's also YouTube, Vimeo, all these social media services.
YouTube was a solution to be able to put their media up on the web. But it's unprotected. And with Kaltura being implemented seamlessly in our classroom websites, that protection is insured.
Technology for technology's sake does little in terms of learning results. You need an overall video management platform so that you can create a video experience that's integrated with whatever other activities are happening on campus.
They're able to upload one large file. And Kaltura, then, is able to embed it elsewhere. They're able to share or not share. You're able to restrict it to just your class. Or you're able to make it public.
What we really love about it is that our students and our faculty who are creating content can concentrate on the content.
Since we have made Kaltura available, it has spread like wildfire across the university to all departments.
It has been extremely successful. We've gone from essentially offering no cogent service for the community overall, with regards to audio/video, to offering a broad variety of Kaltura-based solutions in the learning management system, in WordPress, in Drupal's content management systems.
Kaltura really is the glue that connects a lot of the video strategy.
It's more than just a way to turn in homework. The students are really interested in seeing what their colleagues are doing. And so we're creating, kind of, these walled-garden workspaces where they have privacy. They have protection from the outside world. Kaltura is kind of the way they can share their ideas with each other in a very 21st-century way.
Video Is the future of learning. And Kaltura is very proud to be able to deploy on hundreds of campuses, changing students' lives day in and day out.
